Notary Services

Notary Public and Commissioner for Oaths services in Calgary, handled by practising Alberta lawyers, in person or by video.

Overview

Signed, sworn and sealed correctly the first time.

Our Calgary lawyers provide fast, accurate Notary Public and Commissioner for Oaths services for property purchases, estate planning, court filings, travel and business.

Clients often ask which service they need. A Commissioner for Oaths can administer oaths and take declarations for documents that will be used within Alberta. A Notary Public has broader authority, including certifying copies and witnessing documents that will be used outside Alberta or outside Canada. Every practising lawyer at OLEX Legal holds both appointments, so you don't have to guess: we review your paperwork and apply the correct seal.

Our approach

Lawyer oversight, not just a stamp.

Your documents are handled directly by practising Alberta lawyers. That means real legal oversight and careful attention to detail that a stand-alone signing service can't offer. If something in your paperwork looks wrong, we'll tell you before you sign.

A missing signature or the wrong seal can delay a closing, a filing or a trip. We get it right the first time.

Can't come to our office? Alberta permits many documents to be commissioned by video. Using secure video conferencing, our lawyers can take affidavits and statutory declarations for clients across Calgary and the province.

We apply the correct seal and signature, so your document is ready to file, send or travel with.

FAQs

Notary questions.

Do I need a Notary Public or a Commissioner for Oaths?

If the document will only be used in Alberta, a Commissioner for Oaths is usually enough. If it is going to another province or country, or you need a certified true copy, you generally need a Notary Public. Our lawyers are both, so we'll apply whichever the document requires.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID, such as a passport or driver's licence, and the original documents. Don't sign anything in advance: you must sign in front of the lawyer.

Can documents be commissioned by video?

Many Alberta affidavits and statutory declarations can be commissioned over secure video. Some documents, particularly those going outside Alberta, may still need to be signed in person. We'll confirm which option works for your document when you book.

Does my child need a travel consent letter?

The Government of Canada recommends a consent letter whenever a child travels abroad without both parents or legal guardians. Having it signed in front of a notary makes it more likely to be accepted by border and airline officials.

Can you notarize a document in another language?

We can witness your signature on most documents, but you must understand what you are signing. For documents not in English, we may ask for a certified translation first. Contact us with the details and we'll let you know.

Will you give me legal advice about my document?

A notary appointment covers identification, oaths and signatures. If you need advice on what a document means for you, such as a separation agreement or real estate transfer, we can arrange a consultation with one of our lawyers.

This information is general and is not legal advice. For advice on your situation, book a consultation.
